Beta 43 repower With respect to installation, there were no problems to speak of. I did have to rebuild the engine bed since the footprint of my old Volvo 17C was different than the new Beta. Not a very difficult project if you are handy with wood and fiberglass. However, Beta will, for an additional cost, adjust the feet of the new engine to fit the existing footprint of your current engine. If you don’t plan on rebuilding the engine bed yourself, I would have Beta match the footprint of your existing engine to avoid the high hourly rates of US marinas. Another thing I would suggest is that you deal with the Beta dealer in North Carolina. During the US boat show, which I didn’t attend, I was able to negotiate over the phone a 20 percent discount on the engine. Also since the engine was sent to an address outside of North Carolina, there was no sales tax applied. Both of these items saved me about $3,000 on the price of the engine. Another added benefit of dealing with the NC dealer is the ability to get excellent advice on the engine from a fellow named Farron, one of the most knowledgeable folks on Beta engines I know of. I also have the TMC-60 tranny with a 2:1 reduction ratio. And the prop size and pitch you mentioned are spot on. Farron recommended a 18 inch prop with an 11-12 inch pitch. He said a pitch on the low end of the range would be best. There were three things that sold me on the Beta. First, all the good reviews I saw on the internet and boating forums. Second, the ease of maintenance on the engine since everything that needs to be reached are in convenient and accessible locations. Finally, the cost of the parts. My Old 35 year old Volva ran well, but the cost of parts will take your breath away. Also, some parts, like come clutches, are no longer available. Was a very simple install. I disconnected the shaft, wiring, and motor mounts from my Volvo and had it removed. Was able to sell the old Volvo MD-17 for $1000. Had the marina rebuild the engine beds and install the new engine. I did the rest of the work. Marina bill was around 2.5 k for install. The Beta 50 uses the same block so if you wanted to upgrade it should not be a problem. I’d be willing to answer any questions from the group if anyone has questions. -Glenn Richardson
